Ex colonie on the Italian Adriatic Coast

A large number of Colonie (meaning colonies) were built in Italy, commencing in the late 1800’s and reaching a peak in the 1930’s under the influence of Mussolini and Italian Fascism. They were assigned various categories including montagne (mountain) and mare (sea). Their original purpose was to provide a few weeks by the sea for children from cities were diseases such as scrofula (TB) were prevalent. They were run as charitable concerns and by religious organisations. Later they were seen as a means of inducting children into the ideology of Fascism, producing little soldiers prepared to die for their country and Il Duce. The Fascist era resulted in the most outstanding futurist-inspired architecture in both brick and concrete. I am starting to research their history and current state and usage. colonie easter 2015-5colonie easter 2015-8
